Written Prescriptions
When can I get a written prescription?
You may obtain Prescription Only Medicines – Veterinary (POM-V) from your Veterinary Surgeon at Tattenhall Veterinary Practice or you can ask for a written prescription to obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or a pharmacy. Your veterinary surgeon can only prescribe POM-Vs for animals under their care.
When a written prescription may not be appropriate?
A prescription may not be appropriate if your pet is an in-patient or immediate treatment is necessary.
How much will it cost?
On request, you will be informed on the cost of medications that may be dispensed for your pet.
A medication review consultation is £33. Any diagnostics that may be required such as blood testing will be charged in addition to this fee.
A written prescription is £20, plus £10 for any additional medication when more than one medication is required. This will be written by the Veterinary Surgeon treating your pet and will be sent to your preferred pharmacy or veterinary practice as an electronic copy. It is your responsibility as the pet owner to inform our practice which company you would like us to send your pets prescription to.
How often will my pet need to be examined by a vet?
The policy of our practice is for pets with a chronic stable condition to have a clinical examination performed by a Veterinary Surgeon every 3 – 6 months, depending on individual pets’ circumstances.
Having a prescription for 6 months still requires your pet to be re-checked by a veterinary surgeon. This is because health conditions can change which means that medication doses may need to be altered or stopped completely; which can only be addressed by examining your pet. We legally cannot prescribe medications without seeing your pet within the last 6 months.
We do ask you to report to us if you are seeing any changes to your pet’s condition or if any possible adverse reaction to medication is seen. This can occur at any time and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Controlled Drugs
Controlled Medications may be prescribed for your pet, by law a Veterinary Surgeon can only issue 28 days’ worth of treatment for your pet in most circumstances.
Online Suppliers
We advise when using online suppliers that you make sure they have accreditations from the VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate). The website/supplier will be classed as an “accredited online animal medicine retailer” or as part of the “accredited internet retailer scheme (AIRS)”. This reduces risks of purchasing fake medications or using fraudulent internet sites.
